It's getting a little cooler here in Kansas City. The weather is starting to change and Fall is in the air.
About this time of year I get flooded with phone calls from patients who woke up with a stiff neck or have neck & back pain when they try to turn their head to one side.
Why the sudden onset of stiff necks? Well, after nearly a month of 100 degree plus heat, your neck is being exposed to cooler temperatures when you are outside or sleep with the windows open. Some people tend to be sensitive to changes in outside temperature, and their body responds by tightening the muscles in the neck and upper back.
In this situation, like many others, the five most dangerous words are
"Maybe it will go away?!?"
A little neck stiffness can quickly turn into NO ability to turn the neck without severe pain. I've seen it now for over a decade. Every fall my office gets a big rush of patients who have a body sensitive to changes in weather, and they come in with a nagging neck stiffness. Fortunately, when you know that neck stiffness is a signal to see the Chiropractor, you can avoid the severe I-can't-turn-my-head-oh-no-now-what scenario, and get back to full functioning of your neck quickly.
Here are a few signs that your neck may need a Chiropractic Adjustment:
-hard to turn your neck to one side to back out of a parking space
-wake up with stiffness in your neck
-headaches after sitting at the computer, knitting, reading, or otherwise looking down
-when you look in the mirror, you can see that your head is tilted or one shoulder is higher than the other
-clenching your jaw or having jaw/TMJ pain
-hit your head and your neck is starting to get stiff
If you start listening to your body, and get to the Chiropractor for an adjustment at the first sign of a problem, not only will you heal more quickly, but you will save yourself time and money, and get back to enjoying life!
How does a Chiropractor help a stiff neck?
Chiropractors are Physicians that are extensively trained in the anatomy, structure, and biomechanics of the body. Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to detect decreases in joint motion which can result in pain, limited movement, and joint degeneration. Chiropractors use a wide variety of techniques to adjust the joints back into proper alignment. This proper alignment results in decreased pain and increased range of motion and joint function. I also include some work on the tight muscles to help prevent the problem from coming right back.
A Chiropractor should be your first stop for neck stiffness, neck pain, headaches, low back pain, and more! It is very important to have a thorough consultation and examination with a Doctor of Chiropractic to determine whether Chiropractic Adjustments are needed for your particular health concerns.
