Kansas City Chiropractor Adjusts Pregnant Women with Webster Technique

Pregnancy is a wonderful and potentially semi-painful experience. Many women, especially towards the end of their pregnancies, experience a lot of uncomfortable moments. Many women have low back pain at some point during their pregnancy. This is usually due to the added weight of carrying a baby. For a body to accommodate for a growing child, relaxin (a hormone) helps ligaments loosen. The ligaments of the pelvis are especially affected. This makes the bones very unstable and misalignment frequently occur. With a misaligned pelvis a woman can experience pain, and in some cases the baby does not have a lot of room to move due to asymmetry of the area. When the baby does not have the appropriate amount of space, they move to find space. Sometimes they even end up in the breech position.

To help turn a breech baby, many women seek out a Chiropractor. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence surrounding chiropractic care and the turning of breech babies.

Chiropractic adjustments do not turn breech babies. Chiropractic adjustments, specifically the Webster Technique, analyze and correct pelvic imbalance and restore proper function to the area. This allows for optimal positioning of the baby, which is head-down.

Here is a case study about a mother with a history of breech pregnancies:

The mother presented at 35 weeks pregnant with her seventh pregnancy. This was her fifth breech baby presentation. She had tried other chiropractors that were not certified in Webster Technique with previous pregnancies to encourage the babies to have room to turn, but they did not. For this pregnancy she was referred by her midwife to find a chiropractor that was certified in Webster Protocol.

The mother received an adjustment once a week for two weeks according to the Webster Protocol and given an at home acupressure point. The mother was scheduled for an induction at 37 weeks due to being high risk. At her last appointment before her induction, the baby was still in the breech position.

The mother returned to care six weeks postpartum. At her appointment, she informed me that her baby had turned head down and she was able to have the normal vaginal delivery that she wanted.
